Down this end of the world, two very important events coincide on Tuesday 5 November.
The main one is the Melbourne Cup - the only horse race that has forced a place to mark it as a public holiday. Al Victoria shuts down to celebrate the world's greatest horse race. Horses come from all over the planet to try to win it, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of UAE has spent tens of millions of dollars trying to win it and failing miserably.
Second celebration starts a little after the Cup - Guy Fawkes Night. The only day we're legally allowed to set off fireworks at home and Auckland sounds like Gaza for a couple of hours. It always surprises me how few gunshots occur during the time - if you wanted to shoot someone, nobody would notice.
I think there's some shit going down in America as well, but I'm over it.
Two Important events Next Tuesday

Umerca: We need no excuses or cover.
Re: Two Important events Next Tuesday
Ah...memories from 2020 and the "election night party thread". As I recall you were appalled at the events as it appeared, on the surface, that Trump was winning, but I tried to encourage you about voting patterns and why it looked to me like Biden had a very good chance of pulling it out.
That one ended happily. I'm not very confident this one will, but things can happen.
And for my part, if I were at the Cup, I would bet on horse number 2. I always bet on horse number 2.
Re: Two Important events Next Tuesday
Indeed we do because Umerca!
Re: Two Important events Next Tuesday
Not a silly move - it's the second-best horse in any race, based on rating.
In the Melbourne Cup, it will be either Irish or French, we don't know which until next Saturday.
