For Catholics, no.arthwollipot wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 12:17 am Can one baptise oneself? Oh, it's a pool, not a font - I've been in one of those. But I'm still not sure it would count as baptising oneself. Catholics will dip and cross themselves with holy water - I think this is pretty much the same thing, just bigger because America. The dog knows what's going on.
Anyone can perform a baptism, but not on himself.
ETA: And the water used for baptism doesn't have to be holy water. If there's time, a priest and holy water are recommended, but if you're in a hurry, anyone and any water can do the job,

Sounds like you know your stuff.
Yet you don't seem screwed up enough to be Catholic.
Do you know about those things you can purchase, i forget their name, that hang around the neck and get you into heaven?
(They come in green and brown.)

Indulgences? They haven't been available since 1567.
If you're not on edge, you're taking up too much space.

Thanks, g-man.
Decent price.
Decent price.

I got better.
(i,e. I was raised Catholic. I gave it up when I was 21.)
And I remember those. They gave us one in CCD class. No one seemed to take them too seriously. I remember hearing about them as the free hall pass to get into heaven, but usually expressed as a belief to make fun of,
I want to say they were called scapulae....but it seems odd they would have the same name as shoulder blades.
Re: The Religion Thread
Scapular.
Which makes more sense. Some etymological connection with shoulders.
The ones they gave us were just a cloth cord with a picture of Mary.
