I started a thread at ISF in who people would most like to be un-banned if they could choose.
You're presently second behind Dr Adequate - a lot of people still remember you fondly.
Hey stanky!

Yes, exactly that.
I understand what they tried to do, and some rules do help when you have a large membership, but the inflexibility of the rules and people who run it is plain stupid.
If someone's posting porn, making threats, or encouraging terrorism, then fair enough to ban them, but stanky's just one of several really good people banned because the moderators there have severe white coat syndrome. Petty government workers given powers beyond their wildest dreams.

Trying to remember; wasn't there a moderator who got themselves banned?

Heh heh. Yes in huge forums some degree of order is necessary to preserve sanity, but big forums aren't places for interesting discussion are they?
We 'stoushed' for days on the new OF forum about how to structure it. One single board (like this) 2 boards (one member view only for more private stuff between old mates) or segmented into categories. Days!! and there were only 5 of us who gave a toss about it at all. Talk about cats! Those moderators haven't got enough old people to wrangle, that'd get their white coats in a twist.
We settled for the 2. .. and it's absolute bloody chaos already, but that's the fun of it really. It's the brainfarts and thought bubbles that occur to throw discussions sideways that make it entertaining. Like good conversation at the dinner table. Conversation has to be a bit flexible or it's no longer conversation.
..and then there's those of us who just prattle on too long. about anything at all .. ... sorry..

They can be, but it's hot and miss.Di Wundrin wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 10:08 am Heh heh. Yes in huge forums some degree of order is necessary to preserve sanity, but big forums aren't places for interesting discussion are they?
I started a thread on trans women that's been going for over 5 years, which devolved into just bigotry now, but for a long time it was a bloody good discussion.
Then there are things like the covid thread, which has been going since January 2020 and has been used as a worldwide resource, even being quoted in Hawaii's state parliament in mid-2020. We have a worldwide network of people who are analysing data - and finding lots of errors in the scientific papers - and have a poster who's one of the world's leading experts in viruses and is on the WHO advisory panel for covid.
Science fares better than opinion, but it is possible.
