Election day here today, an election for the members of a new Constitutional Council who are to write a new Chilean Constitution to replace Pinochet's 1980 Constition which is still in effect. This will be the second attempt at redrafting the Constitution.

The previous one failed in a national vote last September, would have been one of the most politically-progressive Constitutions around.

Finally made it to where we'll be for about the next 2 1/2 weeks. Licancabur on the left pretty much right at 20,000 feet.

Outside a little outpost called San Pedro de Atacama, almost right on the Chilean/Bolivian border.

Northwest Argentina isn't far away. There's a shitload of stratovolcanoes in this part of the Andes.

Amazing - it's almost identical to Ruapehu national park, with a conical volcano and a larger one next to it.
