As I understand it, it was parked there, and the rail gave way.

we got problems. Old ones, in this case, coming home to roost.
Derailments evidently average 3 per day. Mostly at switch yards, they say.

Most derailments happen under 10 mph.
Usually it's the switch points moving just enough to let the wheels go off track. Normal wear and tear will do this to the switches if you don't keep up with the maintenance.
No airbags, but I do work with a few windbags.
