Grayman might be amused by my recent explorations on bass electric guitar. Being as I've no history with the instrument, i'm allowed to rethink its place as i experiment. (On my bucket list for this winter: make an album's worth of experimental music. Last night, my neighbor, freshly returned from a trip out west, downloaded an app on this device for recording and editing, which I'll soon be wrestling) One of the efforts involves playing bass as the lead instrument; adding higher notes with 6 string, in a more conventional bass-like role.
To that end, I've retuned the bass to d,a,d,f# or the first 4 notes of a d major chord. And playing those strings with a slide and an overdrive pedal.
With the slide over the pick-up, on the highest string, i've found a harmonic note that's above the highest note i can find on the 6 string.
This has brought out a funkiness i didn't know was in there. Like, almost calypso. (I have a keyboard with multi drum beat options i use to keep track, like a fancy metronome) and for this bass experiment (or blasphemic abomination) i'm using a latin groove. I plan to remove the mechanical drummer at the end and replace it with hand drums, which, hopefully, i can still play.
last time i tried to record myself was in the early 70's. On cassette tapes. The digital stuff is Greek to me. I'm finally forced to confront my aversion to this cheap modernity. More adapters, of course, will be needed. Hilarious how many obsolete devices I've kept from the end of the analog days.
There's a whole rock and roll band in my shitty little room now, minus the humans. Mary is intrigued by the noises emanating, but not yet offering to hop on. I've a fantasy of using her voice, ala Yoko Ono, but less grating, to do non-lyrics in the place where words normally go.

Okay, well you should definitely take a look at Charles Berthoud. The guy can make a bass sing.

i watched "I froze my amp in a block of ice". and the one with shoelaces for strings. but he plays too fast, i think. I guess because he can. I'll likely try the bow soon. And a cordless drill, near the pick-ups. Sounds cool on a six string. Hard to fit into song, unless there's a wild rumpus part.
