It depends on who you hear to large extent. Some of the gurus are trying calm everyone down, others are rattling the sabres but a glance at their motives sorts them out a bit. Some are trying to keep the economy calm, the others are trying to pry some funding out of the politicians who allowed our Defense to become about adequate to repel a small fleet of fishing boats as long as they had no missiles.

Just nobody mention the NZ part of that. We have zero aircraft, two naval corvettes that could probably stop a fishing boat, half a dozen helicopters, probably about Falklands vintage, and an army that can boast a battle-ready force of over 100. (not much over)
