Holy fuck. I've just been looking at the long-range forecast for NZ and if the forecast holds, we are going to get utterly pummeled by a cyclone in 6 days' time. The computer plot shows a sub-tropical low strengthening to cyclone force in the Tasman Sea before hitting NZ dead centre.
If it's right, there will be an enormous amount of flooding, with the storm surge hitting the shallows of the Firth of Thames.
I'm hoping the forecast is wrong, because if not, it's going to be a major disaster for large parts of the country. No worry to us on our hill, protected from the nor' easter.

I hope you're not like my mate, who has one damaged eye and one glass eye.
He can't see well enough to pass the eye test for driving, so he got a mate to do it in his place - nobody checks ID in those situations. When I know he's on the road, I stay off it.
Aren't you guys under a permanent tornado watch?
I see California's getting a taste of what's headed our way.

What do you call a native American eye doctor from Alaska?
An optical Aleutian.

7-metre waves. Nice day for fishing.
Still, they could do with the rain, just maybe not all at once.

That cyclone is now very firmly expected to hit NZ, but a bit lower down the island from us.
Weather warnings over the past few days have gone from "Bit of dodgy weather on the way" to "Holy fuck, that's nasty!".

People are starting to build arks. Lots of places have had 1-3 months worth of rain in 24 hours, and more to come.
