Those big saguaros can be hundreds of years old, apparently.

Imagine being surrounded by folks who constantly claim, "This is the greatest country on earth".

And you ask, "Have you ever been anywhere else?"

And the reply is, "No, why should I?"

Imagine.

The ones who escape to other countries aren't a lot better.

I was having a conversation today about how every American I know who moved to NZ is either a complete loser or outright scammer.

I saw something recently, maybe it was on the Tock Ticks, about an American who was raised all her life to believe she lived in the "greatest country in the world", then moved overseas and experienced how the rest of the world sees America. It was, apparently, something of a shock.

In May, 2017, my wife and I spent some time in Colombia, SA, including a few days in a picturesque little place called Barichara, Santander...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barichara

Anyhow, one day we were strolling around and on the town square local children were having a bake sale to raise money for their school, we had to buy some goodies. Of course the kids were cute as could be, some surrounded us, wondered where we were from, I told them to guess.

Not sure what was said first, was it "Italia?", maybe "Argentina?"

I said no, then "Alemania?" Another kid, "Francia?"

Said no, same kid thought a bit and ventured "París?" That was funny, I should have said yes, what a good kid. But I messed up and said:

Los Estados Unidos.

Not like I saw any of the kids shudder or recoil when they heard that, it was way more subtle, they all just suddenly became involved in something else, we were no longer surrounded nor interesting, like we'd never been there to begin with.
