If I ever make it down that way I'll stand you a Single Malt or two, provided you indulge.
Three drinks I will always say yes to: single malt scotch (only straight - if I see you put water in it, whether frozen or not, it goes down the drain), Veuve Cliquot champagne, and martini - as long is it's 4 parts gin, 1 vermouth, no olive, no ice; shaken only, and not because of James fucking Bond. Only a barbarian would stir a martini - if it's made right you'll dissolve the spoon.

I gave up water or ice in my scotch years ago. As for the martini, why fuck with Vermouth?

Gin's a bit bland on its own and vermouth just adds a little taste without reducing the alcohol content by more than a smidgen.

Ah. There's my problem right there.
If I were making myself a 'bone dry' martini, I'd start with potato vodka, or maybe Stoly or perhaps Grey Goose. Which technically makes it something other than a martini, eh? I'd rinse the ice with vermouth and pour that off then treat the vodka to the ice and then pour that into a chilled martini glass. No olives. Pickled garlic.

Yes.
Martini is made with gin. I've only ever used vodka for one thing - to dump in lemonade to take to concerts. Awful stuff. It's why Russians are so fucking bad-tempered.
