Holy fuck, it's hard to know which of those stories is worse.

On balance, probably the jail death - if you're in America you can reasonably expect to get shot, but that cell is worse than Stephen King could dream dream up.

It's because there's this idea in America that once you've been found guilty of a crime, you are no longer human and do not deserve any decent treatment. The most inhumane treatment is simply them getting what's coming to them - reaping what they sowed. If they didn't want to be eaten alive by bedbugs, they shouldn't have committed crime.
