Oklahoma’s education board has revoked the license of a former teacher who drew national attention during surging book-ban efforts across the U.S. in 2022 when she covered part of her classroom bookshelf in red tape with the words “Books the state didn’t want you to read.”

The decision Thursday went against a judge who had advised the Oklahoma Board of Education not to revoke the license of Summer Boismier, who had also put in her high school classroom a QR code of the Brooklyn Public Library’s catalogue of banned books.

I see your hero, RFK Jr has now endorsed Trump, who's promised him a position in health if he wins.

I presume you must now vote for Trump, since Junior says you should. After all, he's such a pacifist good bloke he can't be wrong.
Ah shit. A position in health? Just what we need. Another antivaxxer fucking up the health care system.

Damn!

sad to see such pat reactions to media nonsense.
jr. has done nothing to fuck up health care.
he's more about bringing some regulations back to prevent the sort of fraud that Pfizer (and others) have paid huge fines for. (prior to covid, btw) not that anyone can hear outside of their range, but our fucked health care system is a feature of our oligarchy in action...as are the overpriced, over prescribed, often shitty drugs that feed them money.
Harris, as prez, will certainly not upset that cart, though she will speak passionately about doing just that.

Pains me to see knee jerk reactions that are wafer thin and oft repeated.
my seeming promotion of bobby is in reaction to the full blown myopia of the status quo, with the 2 flavors.
it's moot, of course, but when i conveyed my preference for rfk jr, the alternatives were a guy in a coma and a raving con-man out to be dictator.

in that light, i couldn't grasp the shit reaction i got.
no matter anyway, for none of them will crack through the power structure of the new america. new world.
you know, the one Eisenhower warned us about, as did JFK after him. Ike, a republican and a high ranking military man and jfk, a true blue dem and bit of a hipster...different as it gets...and both warned of this.

and now, THIS is what we have.

(and it makes a joke of surface politic and naked kings. the election becomes theater more than a live game.
soon, even the pretense of democracy will be unnecessary.

nothing could make me vote for Trump.
(although, after his death, it's hard to imagine what could come forth from maga-mania. could take a hard left, or a hard right. guaranteed corruption, in balance with the dems corruption so's nobody dumps on the game.
we can't change because they got something on you. everyone's got something they're not proud of and now it's probably on line.

we're black-mailed by our fear of going to detention, essentially.

boycotts may already be hobbled via the new shopping and money transactions being visible, and control of money flow disrupted, to prevent conspiratorial activity in the name of homeland security.

Not buying a product, in coordination with others, might fall within the broad "terrorism" label. For which, one can be detained indefinitely without charges or free lawyers. We're very close to dystopia; not even entertaining utopia, whilst the big villains suck ever more vital fluids from our toil, without regard even for their own evil sustainability.

I've seen him speaking. His family has arrived at the same conclusion: He's an antivaxxer. And that makes him delusional as well.

How's the nettle treatment coming along there stank? :D

Should be in the "Reasons we deserve to be doomed" thread.

Holy fuck - how the hell did you get so many crazy cunts in America? I suspect lead-based paints.

Usually, there's a bit more to the story than the slanted headlines make it appear. If it were just a personnel matter, i.e. she was fired, I would assume that was the case. As it is, "revoking a license" seems odd. I didn't know there was a license to teach. Minimum qualifications, yes. Even certification. But "revoking a license" seems really weird, and doesn't seem to match the story.

Maybe I'll look it up.

From the article about the teacher.
Walters said at Thursday’s meeting that Boismier violated rules that prohibit instruction on topics related to race and gender. He told reporters that she “broke the law.”

Boismier has maintained that she did nothing wrong.
The two statements are not contradictory. If there are bad laws, breaking them is illegal, but not necessarily wrong.

The usuals path to beating a ruling like this is to get the law overturned because it is unconstitutionally vague, or that it punishes people for religious or political opinions, as opposed to actions.

The superintendent (Walters) seems like an ultra jerk. Based on what little I see in the article, I think the teacher's license will end up being restored by court order. To me, providing a QR code isn't the same as keeping books in classrooms or libraries, so I think that teacher might win on that route. Also, the prohibition on "topics related to race" is either overly broad, or targeted toward opinions, instead of actions, so I think she will win unless there's more to the story.

I've been on "the wrong side" (i.e. the right wing side) on some of these issues. Very bluntly, some of the banned books (i.e. banned from schools or school libraries. No book has been actually banned.) are pornography. There should nit be laws against them, because there should be no need for laws against them. They shouldn't be on school shelves.

Don't get me wrong. I like pornography. I just don't think the schools should be providing access to it. What has happened in America is that the left got so stupid that people have supported the right wing overreaction. I find myself looking for middle ground, and not finding it from any politician.

As a Supreme Court justice, whose name I forget, once said, "I know it when I see it."

I'm quite confident you use that word in sentences at least occasionally. When you do, I'm sure you know what you are talking about.

Indeed, but I am not a lawmaker. Lawmakers have to be extremely precise. They are the ones who are going to have to define it, and even then there will undoubtedly be a certain amount of ambiguity.
