The stories we were told as kids were all gruesome, as i recall. I've always thought it was odd. Take "Rock a by Baby in the Tree Tops". That was a song meant to fall asleep to. It doesn't end well for the baby. The nursery tales were mostly grim. I still remember them all. They didn't paint a Disney-esque world.

Maybe the parents were trying to harden the wee ones; prepare them for the grim reality of their future.
