Did a circuit today on the tereferico mass transit system in La Paz. Amazing system, widely used, I rode five different lines, cost me equivalent 2 USD.

Where are all the trees? Cities should have trees!
If you're not on edge, you're taking up too much space.

A quick search tells me that while La Paz is pretty high above sea level, it's not above the tree line. And in fact you can see some trees there in dedicated parks.

One of the things I like about Canberra is that you can't see the suburbs from above, because they're covered in trees. I wouldn't want to live where there weren't large trees nearby. Trees mean clean air, and trees mean birds. But this isn't the thread to wax poetic about Canberra's brightly coloured parrots.

The Incas and the civilizations before them farmed and managed landscapes in what is now Bolivia and Peru on an epic scale. The potato was domesticated around here between 8000 and 5000 BC. The Spanish conquest decimated all that. Extensive grazing replaced intensive farming.

Though I can see quite a number of trees outside the window this morning. Fortunately not any Australians.
