I wonder if veterans of World War II who weren't at D-Day get tired of the fuss.

Don't get me wrong. I like all the fuss in a way, and I know we can't commemorate every battle, because that would be every day, but it just seems like an awful lot of fuss is made out of D-Day.

Some years back, about the time of the 75th anniversary which also got tons of media attention, the thought struck me that no matter where you were in the war, or some other war, if people were trying to kill you, and they succeeded at killing some of your friends, that was your D-Day, and it wasn't less significant just because you happened to be somewhere in Italy at the time.

I'm told that over in Australia there is, or at least was, a big fuss about the Battle of the Coral Sea, but I don't know how big it was, really, or if that has been continued into the 21st centrury.

It's something that most of us know about, yes, but we commemorate Gallipoli far more. Public holiday and everything.

If we don't remember history we're doomed to repeat it. Plus, these people gave their LIVES for fucks sake.

Memorial Day holiday used to be known as Decoration Day.

Sometimes way more complicated in some families...

My grandparents called it Decoration Day. My grandmother's grandfather was a Civil War veteran. (Missouri.....Confederate) However, when I heard them talk about it, it wasn;t a military thing. They would go and decorate family graves, not veterans' graves.
