It feels rather hopeless. Even a ban on assault rifles would be fairly lame, as there are so many already in circulation. I can't see Americans voluntarily turning in their weapons like was done in Oz. Iirc, we have aprox 1/2 billion firearms. People also know how to make crude guns and ammo at home...
