The Pandemic Thread
Setka's certainly a player to watch!  Seems to always come up as the sole survivor when there's a stoush on.
I don't know all that much about him other than what spills out when Shorten's involved really.
I know he's fond of a dollar and is not fussy about the deals he makes to sell out his members' conditions. That seemed to me to be the trigger for "Lockdown revolution" and things got complicated from there on.

I could see why Albo wanted to distance Labor from him and the CFMEU but Shorten's still Setka's buddy it appears and that says enough for me about Bill. Dodgy

I have long given up trying label them all 'ismically',  all types seem to be embedded in all Parties and it comes down to being so complex labelling someone  Labor moderately left of Genghis but with Stalinist leanings, or a Liberal far Right of Lenin but with Green sympathies borders insanity.   They're just people with agendas who wear whatever 'uniform' suits their current needs and meets the demands of their 'lobbyists/sponsors'.

Hell I don't even know where I fit on the scale of Isms.

To me a Nazi these days is chubby loser with a swastika tatt and crew cut who gets off on kissing pictures of Adolph in his garden shed.  The kind of people others refer to as Nazis appear to be a long way from what the originals were ideologically.  But I've known a couple of real ex nazis in my youth and they were different as chalk and cheese.
They worked where I did for a while as we were the dumping ground for immigrants that didn't immediately find a 'fit' or that nobody else would work with.

One was the Hollywood version supercilious prick,(moved on quickly TC)  the other was a farm boy who had joined them because they gave him free boots and fed him.  To him they were the Socialist Party they started out as.  They were the Party for the poorer class Germans according to his description.  .   He voted Labor! He was around a few years, teleprinter and line technician.
Both revered Hitler but for totally different reasons.  People are not that easy to label.

What is Setka? Nazi? or closer to organised crime boss using the union as his troops?
Right wing these days doesn't mean it's structured on th 3rd Reich.  I've heard just about everybody referred to as a 'nazi' of some kind or other.  The meaning is lost.
I've no idea what's in Setka' skull but he's a user, and a hard boy and I sure wouldn't want to tangle with him. Confused

It's always about the ultimate aphrodisiac, power.

I hadn't realised until recently how close Shorten was to him. That should have been enough reason for Labor to go nowhere near him.

Both. And when I call him a Nazi, I do mean a real black-shirted Heil Hitlering Nazi. The Serb nationalists were always close to Germany's insane element - they did start WWI, which means they're responsible for both world wars, because WWI merely set the stage for II. They carried it on during the genocide in the '80s/'90s, and they're still fucking at it now. Serbia is actively increasing its army and belligerence.

I agree with you that you wouldn't want to get in the Setka's bad book - the Serbian Nazis/Mafia makes the Russian Mafia look like an old folks home choir, and the Russian Mafia makes the actual Mafia look like kindergarten kids. The back-story to Serbian crime gangs is quite fascinating - the tl;dr version of which is that it's Tito's fault - he exported the crime gangs to the rest of Europe and guaranteed them immunity in Yugoslavia as long as they didn't get involved in unapproved crime back home. Much like Britain's use of pirates in earlier centuries - where they got licence to kill and rob everyone they met that wasn't British.

And now for a funny story from NZ's pandemic - we had Northland (everywhere north of Auckland) locked down suddenly on Friday night.

Two hookers had had enough of no income* during the lockdown they forged travel papers and went up north for a fucking spree. They travelled all over Northland, doing tricks, and then one of them turned out to have Covid. Unsurprisingly - and no doubt to the extreme relief of their customers - the one the have has have clammed up like a British spy and the cops have no idea where they went, plus she isn't giving up her mate, either.

*Legit hookers have been entitled to claim welfare, same as everyone else unable to work, so I'm picking they're more the street hooker/drug addict type, which means they'll be spreading it through sharing meth pipes as well as however many they fucked along the way.

People in Northland aren't seeing the funny side, because Maori up there are about 40% of the population and they're heavily infected with antivax.

Has Cindy phoned Dan yet for mutual lockdown magic bullet failure consolation?  Perhaps someone should clue them in that humans don't all play by the "Simon says" rules.

Get set for a sudden reversal of agenda from Cindy,  any day now she will announce that due to the excellent job her government has done in controlling the spread of Covid, and the exemplary efforts of health care staff the 'new' health advice is to proceed with a gradual easing of restrictions with the goal of re-opening the country.

I kid you not, this is what Ogrous Dan is spinning as the reason for his him finally giving up the ego driven ambition of being "the only government in the world which has beaten the Delta variant!" ...  bwaaaahahahaha.

He's bloody brilliant at the dark arts of polispeak.  Legendary spinning talents.

He hasn't failed!  The case count rose to a new record just under 2,000 per day a couple of days in a row, but he hasn't failed to stamp out Covid19!    No sireee, he hasn't failed to beat that Delta variant at all.

"Nooo no no, we weren't trying to eliminate it..."  it seems that all along St Daniel was merely 'keeping them safe" (under strict house arrest, policed by cops wearing riot gear   who broke into houses and arrested a pregnant woman having breakfast for posting a suggestion that people should protest the lock down rules on her Facebook account!  ..that was 'only done'  to keep Victorians safe) ...  while he planned how to open Victoria under a "Covid safe plan."

Ha, all along he knew exactly what he was doing, ,,,good ole' Dan eh?. ... somehow I don't think Cindy could come close to pulling that level of gold  standard  bullshit out of the hat.   But be prepared for her to try, and give up as gracefully as possible in the next few weeks.  She'll see that staying in charge in the face of Maori fury may not be a great career move .  By turning over health responsibility to the 'people' she can stand back a bit from the direct line of fire. and go "tut, I told you all be careful".

I reckon the Yanks should send their pollies down here for a crash course in Spinpolitik,  we are bloody brilliant at it!

The WA and QLD Premiers are starting to wobble towards hinting at "exit plans" already now that NSW is breaking out and NX can't afford to be too far behind.   just sayin'.Wink

PS: while those 'case' figures are still souring skyward in Victoria, the death rate isn't!  1,890 cases but only 5 deaths, and that fatality figure remains in mostly single figures regardless of case No. spikes.

Good sign for NSW, happening that way in the UK too.  fingers crossed but we're breaking out at midnight regardless.

She did the reversal, but hasn't once mentioned that they've left elimination behind as a plan. Her fan club hasn't noticed.

There's little doubt that vaccination takes away the vast majority of death and ICU stays, which is all we need.

Dan's apostles and accolytes are still pretending not to have noticed too. Big Grin

Cindy looks to be thinking that way, too.

60 cases today, giving us 148 in the past three days. The elimination scheme is dead, buried and rotted away.

I suppose we fared better than most in some ways but shit, we'll be paying for those few months of 'safety' for generations.  Makes me want to apologise to the unborn, they'll still be forking out for the loan repayments.

We may have been wrong all along you know.  Maybe God just retired and moved to Queensland?  How those buggers have avoided a massive outbreak is beyond miraculous!

Their borders are closed yet it's estimated that 13,000 vehicles per day still cross from NSW most with work permits.
Every week someone gets sprung positive for Covid and they fly into a panic and trace everybody who might have passed within a kilometer of them ...but nothing happens!

People who have been found to be infectious and going in and out of pubs and supermarkets and footy matches for a week have failed to start a big outbreak.  One or 5 others may have picked it up but that's been it.
And it's happened heaps of times!

One person put 8 million into lock down in NSW!  Yet Qld's had dozens and no big outbreak...  what's going on up there?

How long can they stay that lucky??

The Sydney outbreak sprang from one flight attendant who infected the dedicated flight crew taxi driver who took it home to his family and it took off and  infected thousands within the couple of weeks before anyone even noticed they were sick!  They lived in an 'ethnic/immigrant' suburb and no one wanted to alert the authorities. siiiiiigh.

(Not so coincidentally, the same thing happened to Melbourne, it broke out in immigrant suburbs and they kept it quiet!  too long.)

Gotta admit, I don't get it either.

Ok, some good news.

Merck has the new drug I mentioned a couple of pages back that reduces the chance of severe disease or death by 50%. You take it on getting symptoms and it stops the disease progressing.

Now, Pfizer has one for use when you do have a severe dose of Covid: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/10/11/astrazeneca-drug-reduces-risk-of-severe-symptoms-or-death-by-50

It also reduces the chance of dying by 50%, so if you take both, you have 100% chance of not dying!

I'm pretty sure that's how it works...
