faith

Faith is one of those curious words that implicates its opposite.

If i said to you, "I have faith in hydrogen.", you'd look at me like i was nuts.

"I have faith in sand."

Huh?? That's not applicable. Sand doesn't require faith. It just is.

Suppose i said "I have faith in our democracy."
or, "I have faith in God."

What this implies is that these are shaky concepts; suspect; not self-evident.
They need my participation. They require my declaration that i am willing to be irrational.
"Belief" is similar.

"I believe in sand."
"I believe in Bigfoot."

Which of the above statements is incongruous?

How about this one:

"I believe in faith."

Words are important. Language speaks volumes.

What if i said "I love electrons."

Wouldn't you immediately wonder if i didn't love protons?

"I love you, Judy."

That's swell stanky! That means you no longer love Cynthia!

(without ms. Di here, my philosophical inclinations feel rather mastabatory. In a sexless way.)

Imagine if you could only get off by clipping your toenails?
But you were cursed by the biology of their slow growth. You can't cut them everyday.

Now they really are special. I love my toenails.

(fuck my fingernails. They can go to hell.)

I have faith that this thread will become the most popular ever, at recodger.
It's up to you to make my dreams come true.
(Don't let me down.)

By the way, I'm fine.

Why??!!??

Do i sound nutty?

Well!

Your shoes are rather shabby.
(so, we're even.)

How about "Faith is as faith does" or "Belief is as belief does"? Both of those make no sense to me only because I have such little use for either word.

Yes, the Catholics taught me well, in a back-handed sort of way. Smile
You can lead 'em to knowledge, but you can't make 'em think.

I say we just cancel them from the language.

I've had too many arguments with theists where they don't understand the difference between believing in god/s and believing the results of peer-reviewed evidence.

I believe that counts as cruel and unusual punishment.

Pro Tip on getting rid of earworms: sing the national anthem.

Now that IS cruel and unusual advise.

I'm surprised we don't have a new anthem yet. The old one has some questionable history, and is hard as hell to sing.
Maybe maple syrup could replace the bombs bursting in air. Dump that high note. You know the one.

The new anthem should evoke religion and Trump.

All Hail the Power of Trump's Name

Trump the Lord is risen today

Crown Trump with Many Crowns

To Trump be the Glory

A Mighty Fortress is our President Trump

You get the idea.
