The concept of 'random' is essential to esoteric physics.
Philosophically, it connects to free will and determinism.

The ultimate metaphor for randomness is the spontaneous decay of atomic nuclei.
In a recent discussion with a hillbilly friend, i suggested this:

What if we're missing some information regarding this random and spontaneous decay?
Mainly, the age of the particles. Science suggests that they were born at different times.

Maybe they decay at precisely the same age?
But we don't really know how old they are?

Good question, but where does science suggest that particles are of different ages? Atoms...unquestionably as everything except Hydrogen and Helium I believe are synthesized in stars. But I think the elementary particles were 'born' at virtually the same instant. Specifically the big bang.

I've read that Proton decay has been theorized, but one would have to wait longer than the age of the Cosmos to see it happen. Wonder if decay for neutrons has been thought and written about?

No, methinks subatomic particles are extremely long lived.
