In NZ, we've always called the Southern Ocean the Southern Ocean, and the idea that it wasn't an "official" ocean never occurred to me.

Until today, when I read that Nat Geo has called it the Southern Ocean for the first time.

That's very cool. Certainly beats any dives around here, although White Island, being an active volcano, has some amazing sights.
Scuba diving in the New Mexico desert sounds interesting to me.

I spent a day there. Neat place.
Similar places exist in northern FL...perhaps the cave diving capital of the world.
The big springs region of the south east Missouri ozarks is another. Though, those springs are cold. And hard to get to.
That's weird alright. Smile
Aphids are pretty weird in many ways. They suck plant sap and shit out honey dew. (honey doo?)
The symbiosis they have with certain ant species is a fun show that can be commonly observed in gardens.
The ants protect them from other insects, and in turn, the aphids shit out the sweet treats on command.
This relationship is so ancient that the queen has evolved a special adaptation to carry an aphid with her when its time to start a new colony.
All the aphids are initially female, and reproduce asexually by banging out little clones of themselves....until the end of the season, when a few males are born. Then, sexual reproduction happens.

I'm guessing this is fairly common knowledge. Maybe not worthy of this thread?

(I know some weirder shit.)
That's really weird shit! Smile
