Bali's has finally erupted.  The usual suspect tourists are whinging about being trapped in  a place they were told not to visit.

Spotted this site for things volcanic
https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/
I was saying to the kids earlier how cool (and deadly) eruptions are.
Such primal stuff! We'd be nothing without them.

I've never seen magma, but it's on my bucket list.
A friend visited an active volcano and described it as overwhelming and ego-crushing; as in becoming an insignificant speck in the face of vast power.

It's easy to see how early people volcanoes as gods.
Of course you need to toss some virgins in there once in a while.

We could still do that, only finding virgins isn't as easy these days.
I've been intrigued by the possibility of diverting lava flow into a pre-arranged series of forms that can handle the heat.

Imagine creating elaborte forms of igneous stone without cutting hard stone.

I'm sure it's been tried, though I don't know about it. The cooling process might be touchy for avoiding fissures.

Often, that liquid stone spewing down hill, becomes the hardest stone we have.
A hollow dome of diabase would be amazing.

Or, more mundane, stone counter tops, made smooth by troweling as opposed to grinding and sanding.
Think to come of it, surely some idiot has tried to ride a lava flow down a mountain in an insulated ceramic boat, in a special suit with an air supply?

Some of those flows have 'rapids' in them. Waterfalls of liquid stone. The thought gives me a metaphorical chubby.

(I added that 'chubby' in the spirit of being on topic. Someone had to add the porn aspect.)
Speaking of liquid stone, I was reading some fringe archaeology stuff yesterday, and came upon an amusing theory about some of the inexplicable stone cutting of the Mayans and others in ancient structures.

This could be nonsense, but it could also be possible:

Based on hieroglyphs and artifacts, it seems the Old Egyptians (and others) had large disks with gold and silver coatings...i.e., big parabolic reflectors, capable of melting stone. I've seen relatively small Fresnel lenses burn concrete in less than a minute of focus.

Hey, at least it doesn't involve aliens.

Jules Verne, c. 1864.

Yeah, I think I probably read the same "fringe archeology" stuff, but those big blocks, e.g. at Baalbek were placed with an anti-gravity gizmo.
They knew how to levitate heavy stuff but the technology has been lost in the meantime.
This theory is 'proven' by how we lost the recipe for concrete in the dark ages so why couldn't we have lost the blueprints for the anti-grav gizmos too? Dodgy

Admit it, it all makes perfect sense! Idea

I loved that stuff, Von Daniken was a fave.  He sold the best quality "alternative facts".   But the fella who wrote about the secret intelligence of vegetables sold a good line too.

Pedantic people, like 2 in particular here! Rolleyes spoiled the supply of that fanciful and exceedingly entertaining genre with their constant harping about facts mattering.  ...mumble.. friggin' wet blankets.. grumble ..  Angry

They should spend more time knocking the bullshit that religion sells!  ...  oh .... wait.  Confused Angel [Image: yellow-laughing-smiley-emoticon.gif]
